Best of best at The Seahorse Apartments

Our fabulous Seahorse Apartments opened back in 2013 and have been a roaring success since day one.  A labour of love, our apartments were originally created to provide a more surf than turf option to existing Westward Living guests - but little did we know that The Seahorse Apartments would prove to be an attractive choice for returning guests and new guests from all over the UK.

From our first Visit England inspection, and we can admit now we were mighty nervous, we were delighted and honoured that our apartments were rated with the prestigious 5*Gold award for the quality of our accommodation and facilities.

And 2016 has delivered once again.  Every year, Visit England inspect thousands of properties and make their ratings based on a strict criteria, and so you never know if you will retain your rating year on year.  But after a few weeks of patiently holding our breath and awaiting the news - we can reveal that once again The Seahorse Apartments have all been awarded 5* Gold by Visit England.

VisitEngland Star Ratings

Self-Catering

The assessors work to strict criteria to check the available facilities. A quality score is awarded for every aspect of the layout and design of the accommodation, the ease of use of all the appliances, the comfort of the beds, the range and quality of kitchen equipment and, most importantly, cleanliness. For very high scoring properties a Gold award may be awarded. The more stars, the higher the quality and the greater the range of facilities and services provided.

To achieve higher star ratings, an increasing level of facilities and services are offered. For example, a 3 star accommodation must offer bed linen (with or without additional charge) while at 4 star, all advertised sleeping space will be in bedrooms (unless a studio) and beds will be made up on arrival.

Gold and Silver Awards

No matter what the star rating or designator, you can find accommodation which excels in hospitality and service and has top scores for bedrooms, bathrooms, food and cleanliness. These special properties hold a VisitEngland Gold or Silver Award, which offer the ‘best of the best’, regardless of the range of facilities and services they offer. There are 4,536 Gold Award properties and 1,189 with a Silver Award across England.* In summary, a high star rating means top quality in all areas and all the services expected of that classification of accommodation. A lower star rating with a Silver or Gold Award means limited services or facilities, but top quality.

Westward Ho! beach scoops Blue Flag - again!

13 may be considered unlucky for some, but not for Westward Ho!  We are delighted to announce that our beloved Westward Ho! beach has scooped the coveted Blue Flag for 13 years running!

The golden sands of Westward Ho! beach are the sole focal point of our beautiful Duckhaven Stud Holiday Cottages. Our cottages have private access to the coastal path leading to Westward Ho! and our grounds delight guests with breathtaking scenery.

We are delighted to be able to offer our guests not only a perfect vantage point of our beautiful North Devon coastline in Westward Ho!, but to also be able to offer families the confidence and security that is paramount to safe bathing and rock pooling at the seaside.

The Blue Flag is an international indication that the beach is clean, safe and meets the highest environmental standards.  Keep Britain Tidy announced in May the winners of this year's Blue Flag and Seaside Awards, with Westward Ho! winning awards in both categories.  The restoration of the traditional natural rock pool has made a welcomed return to the Westward Ho! beach expreience and is not to be missed for swimming and rock pooling.

Westward Ho! will be one of only 68 beaches in England flying the Blue Flag!

The Blue Flag Award is the international standard for the best beaches in the world. Westward Ho! has also been honoured in the Seaside Award category – Keep Britain Tidy's own award for the beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities.

With more than two miles of golden sand backed by a unique pebble ridge, linking to Northam Burrows Country Park, part of the UK's only United Nations Biosphere Reserve, Westward Ho! has plenty to offer the beach lover and nature enthusiasts alike.

We look forward to welcoming our guests and sharing our beautiful Blue Flag beach with you.

Setting the scene

Watching a plan come together, from concept to architects' images to being physical structures is thrilling. But there is nothing like the last final touches, buying furniture and art, choosing colours and creating a unique environment that will make our guests feel at ease and pampered.

Luckily we are ahead of schedule for the first three Seahorse Apartments, which will be ready for our first guests by Easter 2013. This means that we can start to think about the touches that will transform the apartments from spaces set in an exceptional location to beautiful, homely yet luxurious holiday apartments.  We have ordered handmade leather sofas so that our guests are in ultimate comfort, drinking coffee as the day begins, sipping wine whilst watching the sun set over the sea, or snuggling up after a day at the beach. Arriving in March, they will be just in time before we add the finishing touches.

The Lobster Pot and Sea Spray are almost complete, with contemporary interiors complete with open plan living areas and views that you will never want to leave.  Because of the stunning, ever-changing views across the Atlantic Ocean, we have chosen neutral colours that will allow the views to become part of the interior, taking inspiration from the textures and colours on our doorstep.  Sea Spray will also be decorated to complement its location, in warm, muted tones designed to invoke memories of warm evenings and the feeling of endless summer days.

Transforming Westward Ho!

The coastal village of Westward Ho! is almost unrecognisable from the seaside village it was 2 years ago. Gone is the outdated village green dominated by public loos, to be replaced by a tranquil, stylish central area. No more is the derelict building that dominated the village, with the air of abandonment being turned into an aura of relaxed sophistication.

The Latitude 51 development has transformed the economy and the face of Westward Ho!, offering jobs, bringing more visitors to the area to sample local produce and giving discerning holiday makers accommodation a little bit more special than the traditional beach chalets and caravans available in the area.

Passionate about where we live, here at Westward Living we were frustrated and saddened by the mass of unrealised potential that Westward Ho! undoubtedly possessed. We didn't want our children, and our children's children, to grow up and move away in search of something more. So we started thinking about what would help Westward Ho!, what it would need to give it a facelift, an economy boost and make it much more desirable, to locals and tourists, adults and children.

And so Latitude 51 was born. The development will ultimately comprise 12 luxury apartments, four boutique shops, offering local art and craft and fresh produce as well as the Westward Arms, an outstanding gastro-pub whose beautifully cooked, locally sourced food is only surpassed by the stunning views and location.  Latitude 51 does, we think, put the "!" back in Westward Ho!.

The first part of the development has been completed, with the Westward Arms and the local shop Everything Westward a hit with visitors to the area. The next phase will see the completion of the first 3 Seahorse Apartments, the Penthouse, Sea Spray and Lobster Pot.  Designed to top spec we will be taking everything that our guests love about the Westward Living Cottages, like a comprehensively equipped kitchen and high quality decor, and combining it with a chic, clean, sea side tranquillity to give guests a fantastic, relaxing water-side holiday experience.
